Festival Players is holding open auditions for its upcoming project ‘Someone In The Crowd’. This will be a touring concert of songs from shows and films, visiting venues in and around the Cambridge area during February and March 2019.

About the show

Our theme for the 2019 tour is ‘Someone in the Crowd – songs of hope, dreams and aspirations’. We’d like our songs to explore the themes of identity – wanting to fit in, wanting to stand out, wanting to find your place in this world.

We’re going to group the songs into four distinct scenes, each of which we believe offers plenty of scope for these themes to be explored. We’re aiming for the songs to flow naturally from one to another, perhaps with the occasional line of dialogue to help that flow.

Our four ‘scenes’ will be: The Commute, The Audition, College Days, and The Restaurant.

Everyone will be on stage in each scene as commuters, auditionees, students and patrons in each case, becoming involved in specific songs as necessary.

The Creative Team

Director: James Hayward

Musical Director: Ana Sanderson

Writer/Assistant Director: Warren Clark

Choreographer: Laurie-Lee McDowell

Producer: Oliver Fisher

About you

This is primarily a concert performance, so we’re looking for strong, confident singers of all ages and voice types. Everyone will be expected to carry solo lines at some point in the show.

Though this is by no means a dance show, there will be movement and some choreography, so you’ll need to be willing to get stuck in on that front too!

There may also be occasional lines of dialogue to help round out our scenes, so acting experience will come in handy.

You must be 16 or over on 31st August 2018 to audition and join the company.

Venues and dates

The concert will be performed on the following dates:

Friday 15 February: Cambourne or Foxton or Haslingfield

Saturday 16 February: Cambourne or Foxton or Haslingfield

Friday 22 February: Cambourne or Foxton or Haslingfield

Saturday 23 February: Robinson Theatre, Hills Rd

Friday 1 March: Sawston Village College

Saturday 2 March: Cambridge University Press

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will be twice a week from 26 November, usually on a Monday and a Thursday, with a break for Christmas (the last pre-Christmas rehearsal will be 17 December, and the first one in the New Year will be 3 January).

Our rehearsals usually take place at Christ the Redeemer Church on Newmarket Road (near McDonalds) from 7.30-10pm.  The postcode is CB5 8RS

Once the performance run starts, we do not usually rehearse in between the performances.

You will be asked to confirm your rehearsal availability on your audition form, which we’ll send you when you book an audition.

The Audition

For your audition, all we ask is that you bring along a song of your choice. Ideally, it should be a musical theatre song – and if it could fit in with the above theme, all the better. We’ve yet to finalise our song list, so you may inspire us to include something we hadn’t previously considered!

Please bring a copy of the music with you for our pianist in a format that will be easy for them to play (individual pages taped together concertina style, rather than book format, for example).

Our musical director may also want to explore the range of your voice, and do a quick harmony check with you.

We may ask you to read a line or two of dialogue (provided to you in the audition room).

Auditions will take place on Sunday 14 October from 1-5pm, and on Wednesday 17 October from 7.30-10pm at Christ the Redeemer Church, Newmarket Road, Cambridge CB5 8RS

To book a slot on one of the above dates, please email auditions@festivalplayers.org

We can’t wait to see you all at auditions!
