With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Evita is one of the most celebrated musicals of all time. It tells the story of Eva María Duarte de Perón, her rise from rural poverty to become the first lady of Argentina and her transformation into a national icon. Winning 7 Tony Awards in its first year on Broadway, the show features songs including “A New Argentina”, “Another Suitcase in Another Hall”, “High Flying Adored” and “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”.
With its incredible sung-through score, it is a show driven by Latin rhythms and the unstoppable dynamism of the descamisados of Buenos Aires who spend their nights dancing tango in dark seedy clubs and their days fighting for change and revolution in the streets. Their situation contrasts with the privileged life of the Argentine upper classes who are protected by the military elite and their remorseless grip on power.
Epic in its scope, ambition and stature, Evita was a ground-breaking musical when it made its debut in 1978. In the intervening years it has lost none of its power to move audiences and sweep them up into the whirlwind life and extraordinary story of one of the most charismatic figures of the late 20th Century.
